Paddle making is a passion for me and despite the fact that I haven’t increased the price of paddles for 3 years shipping costs continue to rise and restrict my sales. I recently lost a sale in northern Ontario because the shipping cost to the North shore of Lake Huron exceeded the price of my basic paddle. I try to be competitive by suggesting the purchase of a two piece paddle which can be sent via mail but the cost of ferrules to me have also increase to the point that the value of my labour is reduced to just a few dollars. How does one remain competitive in today’s market when external influences restrict one to local markets which ultimately become saturated?
Despite the challenges of increasing shipping costs I have had 3 orders in April from customers of mine purchasing a second paddle two of which have been shipped.
